This week we started exploring our ideas more and using the workshop to create pieces and develop work.
To begin the week I used the materials I had collected at the Thames and formed a slab piece that represented the timeline of ceramics down the Thames. I chose to get straight into making rather than researching ideas since I’m able to generate thoughts while creating. After I created that piece I spoke to Sara about it and she reminded me that I need to ensure I am continuously linking my work with the title of the brief.
After creating this piece I went back to my sketchbook and thought back to the title of the brief and how the timeline I had created related with this. I decided i wanted to carry on making and see where ideas lead me.
Using the vessels I saw at the Southwark Mudlarking exhibition as inspiration I threw a pot on the wheel, using the structure of a Roman pot as my inspiration. This pot sparked memories and thoughts about other artefact ceramics and so later that week i went to the V&A to look at a large collection of artefacts. The V&A prompted thought on ceramic decoration, similar to the decoration I saw at the mudlarking exhibition.
That weekend I also visited Salisbury museum, where there is a large collection of ceramics from the local area. This museum sparked a trail of thoughts about Urns, death and the celebrations and ceremonies which surround it.
